The Challenge: Achieving Regulatory Compliance for Sterile Medical Waste Disposal
A medical waste recycling facility required a high-torque, reliable system to process bulk clinical waste arriving from hospitals in varied packaging, including orange bags and cardboard cartons. To meet UK landfill and sterilization standards, the waste—ranging from PPE to dressings—needed to be reduced to a uniform particle size of less than 20x20mm. Achieving this fine fraction in a single pass with heterogeneous hospital waste is difficult and prone to mechanical jams.

The Solution: Double-Cutting Pre-Shredder & Secondary Shredder Configuration
We engineered a high-performance Dual-Shaft Shredding System to act as the primary stage before the sterilization furnace:

- Stage 1: High-Torque Pre-Shredder: The first unit acts as a primary breaker, shearing through bulk bags, cartons, and varied hospital waste to create a manageable rough shred.
- Stage 2: Precision Secondary Shredder: Positioned directly beneath the first, the secondary shredder further refines the material. This “double-cutting” approach ensures the final output consistently meets the 20x20mm requirement for Alternative Treatment (AT) and landfill acceptance.
- Sterilization Furnace Optimization: By downsizing the waste into fine, high-surface-area granules, the system ensures maximum thermal penetration during the sterilization process, increasing the overall efficiency of the furnace.
