The Challenge: Handling Variable Powder Flow in Confectionery Production
A high-volume production facility for jellies and bakery mixes required three independent mixing and feeding lines for starch, sugar, fructose, and dextrose. Each of these raw materials presents a unique handling challenge due to varying grain sizes, specific gravities, and angles of repose. Dextrose, in particular, is notorious for its poor flowability and tendency to “bridge” or “arch” in intake hoppers. The client wanted a high-efficiency vertical lift but specifically requested a solution that avoided the complexity and cost of additional mechanical agitators.

The Solution: High-Flow Vertical Auger with Optimized Intake Geometry
We engineered a specialized Vertical Screw Conveyor (Vertical Auger) tailored for the difficult rheology of dextrose:
  • Aspiration-Free Inlet Design: To meet the “no-agitator” requirement, we designed a bespoke inlet funnel with specialized internal geometry. This high-flow hopper utilizes gravity and specific wall angles to ensure the dextrose remains free-flowing and fully “flood-feeds” the vertical screw without bridging.
  • Multi-Material Versatility: While optimized for dextrose, the system successfully manages the diverse physical properties of sugar and starch, providing a consistent feed rate to the downstream bakery mixers.
  • Hygienic Food-Grade Build: Every contact part is fabricated from polished stainless steel, ensuring full compliance with UK food safety standards and allowing for rapid cleaning between ingredient changes.
