Industrial Sugar Handling: 50m³ Stainless Steel Silo & Dense Phase Conveying
.
The Challenge: Preventing Material Degradation and Agglomeration
Handling granulated sugar presents two major technical hurdles: the tendency for sugar to form hard lumps (agglomerates) during storage and the risk of crystal breakage during transport. For high-quality food production, the sugar must arrive at the weighing hoppers in its pure, granulated form without “fines” or large clumps that can block the line.

BritSOLIDS engineered a complete intake-to-process solution designed to maintain material integrity and ensure a continuous flow:
- 50m³ Stainless Steel Storage: A high-capacity silo designed for truck-filling intake. The use of stainless steel ensures a hygienic, corrosion-free environment, essential for food-grade sugar storage.
- Integrated Sugar Crusher: To address the natural build-up of agglomerates at the silo outlet, BritSOLIDS installed a heavy-duty lump breaker (crusher). This ensures that only uniform, free-flowing granulated sugar enters the conveying line.
- Dense Phase Pneumatic Conveying: Unlike standard high-velocity systems, we utilized a dense phase pressure vessel system. This technology uses high pressure and low velocity to “push” the sugar through the pipes, significantly reducing friction, pipe wear, and crystal degradation.
- Precision Distribution & Dosing: At the end of the conveying line, the system features 4 high-efficiency diverter dampers that distribute the sugar into 4 independent weighing hoppers, allowing for simultaneous feeding of multiple production lines.

By implementing the BritSOLIDS dense phase system, the facility achieved:
- Preserved Material Quality: Zero crystal breakage due to low-velocity transport.
- Uninterrupted Flow: The integrated crusher prevents downtime caused by silo outlet blockages.
- Automated Recipe Accuracy: Precision weighing at 4 different points ensures consistent product quality across all batches.
